Sexual infections spread among young people
THOUSANDS of people in Bolton were diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections (STI) last year, according to new figures out today — and most of the new patients were aged 15 to 24.
Health chiefs say many more people are expected to be unaware they have the conditions.
The Health Protection Agency has released figures on STIs broken down into primary care trust (PCT) areas for the first time.
Bolton was one of the worst areas in the North West for chlamydia, with 2883.5 people, aged 15 to 24, per 100,000 diagnosed with the condition in 2009. In the over-25s, 101.9 people per 100,000 had chlamydia.
Another area of concern is syphilis with the town seventh worst of the region’s PCTs, with 4.9 per 100,000 last year.
